Is this right?…
Maid-Cleans up the house such as bathrooms, floors, kitchens, etc
Housekeeper-Runs the house and does the chores such as laundry, cooking, organizing (almost like a mom)
Nanny-Takes care of the children and might cook?
Butler-Serves food

A nannies only job is to be a caregiver to a child , normallycooking is not in the job description
housekeeper can be a umbrella job such as cleaning, cooking and household work ,grocery shopping and other jobs some things that a maid would do however they normally have alot more training than a maid and maids normally have the harder jobs
butlers – often oversee the household work, and may attend the employer at parties and may serve food. it’s actually a skilled job( you won’t see a butler lower-end homes) they also may entertain guests, keep a eye on inventtory and business stuff, and have a wide range of abilities. they also are often tasked with waking the employer
Nowadays, maid and housekeeper are interchangeable terms. Though socially speaking I think it sounds derogatory to call someone a maid, so they generally call them housekeepers now (with the same duties). BUT one exception is some maids (no housekeeper I know of) is live-in.
As for nanny, I’ve always thought it was for taking care of children and running some errands for the parents.
As for butler, they are traditional for serving food and hanging up coats and opening doors. Rarely do you hear of people having butlers anymore (unless perhaps they’re extremely wealthy and old school).
As far as I know yes. Except I thought a butler was someone who drives them around and escorts people n stuff
Maid is a domestic servant, housekeeper comes over and cleans and keeps the house in order, nanny takes care of the children, and a butler is a manservant of the house (opposite of maid)…. so yes your basically right
i have always been thinking that a butler is the one standing at the door and opening it for ya.maid usually serves the food after she cleans the house. and cook must cook, nanny must take care of children and be responsible for their upbringing
Not really. In a household where all of the above are present the housekeeper ensures the smooth-operation of the house. She is genteel by birth, hopefully, and thus aware of all the nuances of a well-bred and well-run household. A house-keeper never does laundry or cooking. Think of her as the Director of the Household. A house-keeper is considered to be a pretty good position.
As for maids, it depends upon what kind of maid and how many. In a household with a house-keeper there would be probably two or three maids. Two downstairs and one upstairs. These days, though, the house-keeper may take on the responsibilities of the upstairs maid (opening and closing windows, curtains and doors; taking care of the plants and flowers inside the house (never in the garden). It really depends on so many things.
In a house with a butler, he answers the door, is responsible for looking after and serving the wine and is responsible for the silver. He works closely with the house-keper to ensure a well-operated household. All of this depends upon what time period, country and how many other servants there are in a house. A house with only 4 servants would never, traditionally, have a butler. Or a housekeeper.
The Nanny takes care of the children. A governess, on the other had, instructs the children. A household having a governess may (or may not) also have a nursery maid. The ordinary chores of the nanny then fall to the nursery maid. The governess is an upstairs servant and can only be engaged or let go by the lady of the house or her husband. All of the other servants report to the housekeeper. Actually, there are some exceptions. A lady’s maid doesn’t report to the housekeeper, nor does a companion or attendant. Even so, everyone must work together.
A household of four servants would ideally have a cook, downstairs maid, parlour maid and a nanny. The parlour-maid takes on the responsibilities of the butler and upstairs maid combined.
I hope that this has helped.
